Bulgaria’s strategic position, rich military heritage, supportive culture, and economic potential make it an ideal candidate for hosting a US military base. Located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Bulgaria is closer to conflict zones in the Middle East and Black Sea region than many NATO allies. As a committed NATO member since 2004, Bulgaria has demonstrated its reliability, participating in joint exercises and modernizing its forces. Establishing a US base would strengthen regional security, deepen US-Bulgaria ties, and deliver significant economic benefits, while aligning with Bulgaria’s pro-Western orientation.

Strategic Location Near Conflict Zones

Bulgaria’s geography is a key asset. Bordering Turkey and the Black Sea, it lies within 1,000 miles of volatile regions like Syria and Ukraine. A US base in Bulgaria would enable rapid deployment of forces, enhancing NATO’s responsiveness to crises. The Bezmer Air Base, already used for joint exercises, could be expanded to support US operations, reducing reliance on distant bases like Ramstein in Germany. Bulgaria’s proximity to the Black Sea also facilitates maritime security, countering Russian influence in the region, especially since the 2022 Ukraine conflict heightened tensions.

The country’s infrastructure supports military logistics. Modernized ports like Burgas and Varna, combined with NATO-funded upgrades to airfields, ensure efficient supply chains. Bulgaria’s role in the Three Seas Initiative further enhances connectivity, making it a logistical hub for US forces in Eastern Europe.

Rich Military Tradition

Bulgaria boasts a proud military history, from the Thracian warriors to its contributions in modern conflicts. Since joining NATO, Bulgaria has invested €1.8 billion in defense modernization, acquiring F-16 jets and upgrading facilities. The country hosts the Novo Selo Training Area, a key site for US-led exercises like Saber Guardian, which involved 2,000 troops in 2024. Bulgarian forces have served alongside US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq, earning praise for professionalism.

This tradition fosters interoperability. Bulgarian troops train to NATO standards, and 90% of officers speak English, easing coordination with US forces. A permanent US base would build on this foundation, enabling year-round training and technology transfers, further strengthening Bulgaria’s military capacity.

Supportive Cultural and Political Climate

Bulgaria’s culture is notably pro-American. Polls show 65% of Bulgarians view the US favorably, higher than in many Western European nations. This stems from historical ties, including US support during Bulgaria’s post-communist transition, and shared democratic values. The government, led by pro-NATO parties, has consistently endorsed deeper US engagement. In 2023, Bulgaria signed a defense cooperation agreement with the US, expanding access to military facilities.

Public support mitigates potential opposition to a US base. Unlike in some NATO countries, protests against US military presence are rare in Bulgaria. Community engagement programs, like those at existing US training sites, have built goodwill through local investments and cultural exchanges, ensuring a welcoming environment.

Economic Benefits

A US base would be an economic boom for Bulgaria. Construction and maintenance would create thousands of jobs, with local firms supplying materials and services. The US base in Grafenwöhr, Germany, supports 10,000 jobs and contributes €1 billion annually to the local economy; a Bulgarian base could yield similar impacts. Towns near the base would see growth in housing, retail, and hospitality, as seen in Ramstein, where local businesses thrive.

US personnel spending would boost small businesses, particularly in rural areas. The government could also negotiate contracts for Bulgarian companies to provide logistics, food, and tech support, mirroring Poland’s model with US bases. Tax revenues from increased economic activity would fund infrastructure and public services, addressing regional disparities.

Expanding US-Bulgaria Relations

A US base would deepen bilateral ties beyond security. Joint projects in cybersecurity, energy, and education would flourish, building on the 2019 US-Bulgaria Strategic Dialogue. The US could support Bulgaria’s tech sector, with companies like Lockheed Martin collaborating on defense innovation. Cultural exchanges, already strong through programs like Fulbright, would expand, fostering long-term goodwill.

Challenges include managing environmental impacts and ensuring transparency to maintain public support. Bulgaria’s government is experienced in addressing such concerns, having successfully managed NATO projects. Engaging local communities early, as done with existing facilities, will be key.

Conclusion

Bulgaria’s proximity to conflict zones, military tradition, supportive culture, and economic potential make it an ideal host for a US base. Such a move would bolster NATO’s eastern flank, deter aggression, and cement Bulgaria’s role as a regional leader. Economically and diplomatically, the benefits would be transformative, positioning Bulgaria as a vital US ally in a turbulent world.
